Summary
The Old Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo, in the north of the country - some 150 miles from the present capital, Sofia - occupies a unique location, built, as it is, on the hills of Trapezitsa, Tsarevets and Sveta Gore, overlooking the Yantra River. The town is situated roughly 700 feet above sea level, and enjoys the temperate climate - with hot, dry summers and cold, damp winters - that is typical of Bulgaria, as a whole, such that spring and early autumn are especially good times to visit.
History
Between the 12th and 14th centuries, the medieval town of Veliko Tarnovo grew into a major centre of political, economic and religious influence, and, indeed, its influence continued through the intervening centuries, until the formation of a fully independent Bulgaria, in 1908. The new capital, Sofia, however, was chosen by Russian forces - because of its strategic location in southern Bulgaria - following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
Culture and Heritage
The modern town of Veliko Tarnovo is a feast of architecture, art and archaeology, with many historical monuments, museums and other cultural treasures.
As just one example, the Tsarevets Hill, or Elevation, to the east of the town, is an archaeological reserve, featuring, amongst other attractions, the "Palace of the Bulgarian Kings" - the main fortress of the medieval capital - and the restored "Baldwin Tower" - commemorating Emperor Baldwin I of Flanders, who, purportedly, met his end there, following the battle of Adrianpole in 1205.
Veliko Tarnovo is also home to an annual International Folklore Festival, intended to popularise traditional music and dance from all regions of Bulgaria, and, indeed, to encourage cultural exchange with countries from all over the world.
How to get to Veliko Tarnovo
The town, and region, of Veliko Tarnovo is well served by the international airports at Sofia, Gorna Oriahovitsa and Varna - Gorna Oriahovitsa, for example, is only some 6 miles away - all of which are within easy reach. Gorna Oriahovitsa is also a major railway hub, and buses run regularly from Sofia, along the national highway, to Veliko Tarnovo, and on, to Varna and other destinations in eastern Bulgaria.
The excellent infrastructure of the region is one of the reasons that property in Varna - in the form of apartments, villas or country houses - is becoming very popular with traditional holidaymakers and foreign property investors.
Once you actually arrive in Veliko Tarnovo, you will find that all the main attractions are within 30 minutes' walk, but, given the location of the town, you may find walking quite arduous. Properly regulated, metered, taxis, can, however, be found throughout the town, and there is also a town bus service.
